Get wet, get fit and have fun! The JCC’s Aquatics Department offers a great selection of swim programs and instruction for all ages. From our baby swim class, kids group and private swim lessons to our distinguished award winning Stingrays swim team, lifeguard training program, and a selection of adult water aerobics classes and lap swimming, we offer something for every age and experience level.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION DAYS AND TIMES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Monday, June 14 - Monday, August 16, 2010


Children who were enrolled in GROUP Aquatics lessons in the spring of ’10 are eligible to re-enroll for the fall ’10 session.
In addition, current Sports Facility members and Nursery and Camp families may register during the priority enrollment period.

Priority swim registration for Fall 2010 will begin on Monday, June 14 at 10:00am and continue on a SPACE AVAILABLE BASIS until Monday, August 16.

  • Spring session ’10 group participants will be advised of the appropriate fall placement at the end of the session.
     
  • New Level 1 participants do not require placement evaluation, but proof of age is required.
     
  • New Level 2 or above participants should bring a Red Cross card, if available or call ext. 321 or ext. 312 to inquire if a swim test will be necessary for placement.

OPEN REGISTRATION: Tuesday, August  17, 2010 from 6:30-8:30pm.
All registration must be done IN PERSON. Only one family per registrant.

Please bring your child’s American Red Cross swim level card if he or she has received one.

Little Goldfish

Parent/caregiver and child work together to learn basic skills such as bubble blowing, kicking, big arms, and safety jumps. Through games, water play and the use of flotation devices, children become comfortable in the pool. Children must wear a swim diaper!

Introduction to Water Skills - Level l
Purpose: Helps students feel comfortable in the water. Level I participants learn to enter and exit water safely, open eyes underwater and pick up a submerged object, submerge mouth and nose, float on front and back, swim on front and back using arm and leg actions, exhale underwater through mouth and nose, explore arm and hand movements, use a lifejacket, and follow basic water safety rules.

Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Level II
Level 2 participants learn to enter water by stepping or jumping from the side, open eyes underwater and pick up a submerged object, roll over from front to back and back to front, swim on side, exit water safely using ladder or side, float on front and back, tread water using arm and leg motions, move in the water while wearing a life jacket, submerge entire head, perform front and back glide, and swim on front and back using combined strokes.

Stroke Development - Level III
Swimmers develop confidence in their strokes and improve other aquatic skills. Level III participants learn to jump into deep water from the side, bob with the head fully submerged, perform survival float, butterfly-kick and body motion, use “Check, Call, Care” in an emergency, dive from kneeling or standing position, use rotary breathing in horizontal position, change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back, submerge and retrieve an object, perform front and back glide, perform front and back crawl, and perform a reaching assist.

Stroke Improvement - Level IV
Level IV participants learn to perform shallow dive or dive from stride position, perform open turns on front and back using any stroke, use safe diving rules, perform a throwing assist, swim underwater, tread water using sculling arm motions and kick, perform compact jump into water from a height while wearing life jacket, care for conscious choking victim, perform the following : front and back crawl, swim on side using scissors-like kick, breaststroke, butterfly, and elementary backstroke.

Stroke Refinement - Level V 
Level 5 participants learn to perfect standing dive, surface dives. Swim multiple laps of, butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, elementary backstroke, introduction to flip turns.

Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Level VI
This class refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. This course includes personal water safety, fitness swimmer, lifeguard readiness, and fundamentals of diving.

Competitive Stroke Technique
Work on all competitive strokes, starts, and turns and endurance to participate in competitive workouts. Level VI certificate required. Aquatic Coordinator, swim coach approval is required.

Pool Birthday Party!
Entertain up to 20 children with a Sunday afternoon Pool Party. Children must be between the ages of 6 and 10 years old; 20 children maximum. $335, which includes supervised pool activities and use of party room! Call x321 for available dates and times!

Swim Team - The Stingrays        AQ02
Must be able to proficiently swim 25 yards of the crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke and have some competitive swim background. Practices must be attended regularly, and championship participation is required. All home and away meets are held on Sundays.

If you are joining for the first time, you must call in for a tryout.  Tryouts will be held on Sunday, September 12 at 5pm.

Do you or your child need a little extra help learning how to swim or perfecting specific strokes? Are you feeling relaxed in the water? One-on-one private swimming lessons may be the solution for you!

Adult Classes

Aquacize
Water resistant, low-impact, non-weight bearing exercises. Use full range of motion during exercises to stretch and tone as well as improve cardiovascular fitness. Aquacize benefits all areas of the body. Swimming skills not required. Physician’s note required upon request.

About Laura Grenadier
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Laura has more than 25 years of aquatic experience as a Waterfront and Pool Director and instructor. She is a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard. Laura heads up the Early Childhood Center swimming program and Summer Camp swimming program and is Head Coach for our distinguished Stingray swim team.
